May 28 (Bloomberg) -- Broadcast networks ABC, CBS and NBC will donate an hour of commercial-free, prime-time television on Sept. 5 for a national show to raise funds to fight cancer.
The ``Stand Up To Cancer'' special will be discussed today by evening news anchors Charles Gibson, Katie Couric and Brian Williams in appearances on ABC's ``Good Morning America,'' CBS's ``Early Show'' and NBC's ``Today Show,'' the networks said yesterday in a statement.
The special will feature live performances by musicians and actors from film and TV. Money raised from the event will help turn scientific discoveries into treatments and fund research that otherwise couldn't garner financial support, the show's producer, Laura Ziskin, said in an interview.
``I've found in my dealings with artists and executives that everybody has been affected,'' said Ziskin, a cancer survivor who produced films including ``As Good as It Gets'' and ``Pretty Woman.'' ``Cancer is an equal opportunity disease, and I believe this community will come together.''
CBS Corp., the New York-based media company controlled by billionaire Sumner Redstone, fell 7 cents to $22.63 yesterday in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares have dropped 17 percent this year.
ABC parent Walt Disney Co. rose 41 cents to $33.64. Shares of the Burbank, California-based company have gained 4.2 percent in 2008. General Electric Co., the Fairfield, Connecticut-based owner of NBC, fell 3 cents to $30.40 and has lost 18 percent this year.
News Corp.'s Fox declined to participate, Ziskin said. The network is welcome to join at any point, she said. Fox will air announcements during the time period and during baseball playoff games, spokesman Scott Grogin said in an e-mailed statement.
The show is scheduled to air at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific Daylight Time
