U.K. Arrests 1,471 People Under Anti-Terrorism Laws Since 2001
By Kitty Donaldson
May 13 (Bloomberg) -- Britain has arrested 1,471 people under counter-terrorism legislation since the Sept. 11 attacks on the U.S., and 102 of them were convicted of terrorism offenses.
A further 94 people were convicted of related offences under non-terrorism legislation, Paul Wiles, chief scientific adviser to the Home Office, told reporters in London today.
The U.K. government stepped up the fight against terrorism after British-born Muslims killed 52 people on London Underground trains and a bus in suicide bombings in July 2005.
