July 1 (Bloomberg) -- Portugal beat England 3-1 in a penalty shootout to advance to the semifinals of soccer's World Cup for the first time in 40 years after England had striker Wayne Rooney ejected.
Portugal goalkeeper Ricardo dived to his left three times and saved shots from Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. Cristiano Ronaldo kicked the winning penalty, hitting his effort high to Paul Robinson's left.
Portugal, which also beat England on penalties at the same stage of the 2004 European Championship, prevailed after a 0-0 draw in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Rooney received a red card after 62 minutes for treading on the groin of Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho.
Portugal, which lost to England on its only previous semifinal appearance in 1966, will next play defending and five- time champion Brazil or France, the winner of the 1998 final. They meet later today.
Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari plotted England's exit from a major tournament for the third time after coaching Brazil to a 2-1 victory in the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup.
