Aug. 2 (Bloomberg) -- David Beckham scored for the Los Angeles Galaxy in an exhibition soccer match against Barcelona, then said he’ll ignore abuse from fans who question his commitment to the club.
Beckham scored with a free kick over the defensive wall as the Galaxy went down 2-1 to the Spanish and European champion last night at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, before a crowd of more than 93,000.
Once again he was booed by some sections of the crowd unhappy at his extended loan period at AC Milan and his reported interest in returning to European soccer. It follows incidents at the Galaxy’s home stadium and in Kansas City where he’s confronted supporters.
“He insulted my wife,” Beckham said of a fan involved in the second incident, according to Sky. “If you insult my family members I am going to stick up for my wife and family. But if it happens again I wouldn’t even look at him. It is not worth the time and energy.”
The attendance was the highest at a U.S. soccer match since the World Cup in 1994. Beckham said most fans were supportive.
“Out of 93,000 people you have 95 or 97 percent who are incredible. Then you have the odd minority but that is life.”
Jeffren Suarez got the 67th-minute winner for Barcelona. Pedro Rodriguez got the opener before Beckham leveled the scores at 1-1 just before halftime.
