March 6 (Bloomberg) -- Michael Jackson’s fans, already celebrating his plans for a concert comeback in London announced last night, now have the chance to see his white-jeweled glove and “King of Pop” crown on display in Ireland.
The exhibition is going ahead as the star sues to stop a planned Beverly Hills sale of the items on display in April from his former home in California. Admirers of the 50-year-old singer are traveling to Newbridge, 30 miles west of Dublin, for the “Once in a Lifetime” show which opened yesterday.
“It brings back a lot of memories to us,” said Frances O’Neill, 56, who came from Dublin with her two sisters to see the exhibition, and had her hand photographed next to the white glove. “You see them on the videos and never think you will actually see them.”
Sale organizer Julien’s Auctions is planning to offer about 2,000 items owned by Jackson, who has sold more than 750 million records and won 13 Grammy Awards. The singer of hits such as “Billie Jean” and “Thriller” is staging 10 concerts at London’s O2 arena in July.
Jackson filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles on March 4 against Julien’s, saying that he wanted the items returned. The auction house’s chief executive Darren Julien yesterday said in an interview that he understood Jackson’s management had approved of everything.
“Michael likes Ireland and it’s at his request that we are exhibiting there,” said Julien, whose sale is set for April 22. There was a “massive amount of inquiries” from people planning to attend the viewing, he said. Julien’s business partner Martin Nolan is Irish.
Neverland, Debts
Jackson agreed to debt refinancing in 2006 to stave off bankruptcy. In 2005, he was cleared of charges of molesting a 13- year-old boy in 2003 at his Neverland ranch, in Santa Barbara county, California.
The exhibition at the Newbridge Silverware Museum of Style Icons also features items from Neverland. The star stocked his 2,900-acre home with exotic animals and amusement-park rides and named it after the home of fictional character Peter Pan, a land where children never grow up. Colony Capital LLC last year bought the loan of about $23.5 million on the estate.
Items to be auctioned include the entry gates to the property (estimated by Julien’s to sell for $20,000 to $30,000), an electrified horse-drawn carriage and life-size bronze and marble sculptures. The larger items are not being shown in Ireland.
The exhibits included a Michael Jackson MTV award for best special effects in a video for “Leave Me Alone” in 1988-1989; Triumph tour pants with rhinestone banding (estimate of $800 to $1,200), a Victory-tour rhinestone-cuff bracelet ($100-$150), and a full-length red-velvet cape with detachable faux-ermine collar.
Black Hat
The main displays show a black fedora featuring Jackson’s name embossed in gold on the inside brim ($1,000-$1,500) and a jeweled crown on a red-velvet cushion ($1,000-$1,500). The custom-designed white-spandex glove has an estimate of $10,000- $15,000 in the online catalog.
Arcade games based on films such as “Jurassic Park,” “Indiana Jones,” “Austin Powers” and “Star Trek” will also feature in the auction, with a life-size Lara Croft “Tomb Raider” statue with moving arms. Fans can also buy a replica of Batman with the suit fitted over a life-size model of Jackson ($200-$300).
“I love toys and gadgets,” Jackson said on the Web site linked to the exhibition. “I like to see the latest things manufacturers have come out with. If there’s something really wonderful, I’ll buy one.”
Fans from Russia, Australia, Asia are expected to travel to the auction, according to Julien.
The live and online auction is due to take place at 9900 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, California 90210, adjacent to the Beverly Hilton, on April 22-25. An exhibition is being held there from April 14-21 with admission of $20.
The Irish exhibition is being held from March 6 to March 21 at the Newbridge Silverware Museum of Style Icons, Newbridge, Co. Kildare. Admission is free.
The case is MJJ Productions Inv. v. Juliens Auction House LLC, BC408913, California Superior Court, Los Angeles County.
