Japan Citizen Killed, One Injured in Mumbai Attacks (Update2)

By Taku Kato

Nov. 27 (Bloomberg) -- One Japanese citizen was killed and another injured in grenade and gun attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai late yesterday.

Hisashi Tsuda, 38, was injured at his hotel and died later in hospital, Hiroki Takemoto, a spokesman for his employer Mitsui Marubeni Liquefied Gas Co., said. The attacks killed as many as 80 people and injured 240, with five-star hotels among the sites targeted, Indian officials said.

``Japan strongly condemns the attacks,'' Chief Cabinet Secretary Takeo Kawamura told reporters in Tokyo today. ``We hope that the Indian people overcome their suffering, and we will continue to cooperate with the Indian government.''

Fire spread through the luxury Taj Mahal Palace and Tower hotel, where terrorists were holding as many as 15 people hostage, the Press Trust of India reported.

Japan hasn't been able to confirm whether any of its citizens are among the hostages, Kawamura said.

Another Japanese citizen was injured in the attacks, a foreign ministry spokeswoman said. Japan's government has been unable to contact about 50 of its nationals in the Mumbai area, Kyodo News said.
