German Authorities Arrest Man Suspected of Ties to Al-Qaeda

By Patrick Donahue

Oct. 2 (Bloomberg) -- German authorities took into custody a 24-year-old man in the Frankfurt area suspected of having ties to the terrorist group al-Qaeda, federal police said today.

The suspect, a citizen of Germany and Turkey identified as Adnan V., is suspected of luring supporters and members for the Islamist group by disseminating al-Qaeda propaganda on the Internet, federal authorities said in a statement.

The man was also accused of buying material to make a bomb after federal police searched an office in Frankfurt and an apartment in Offenbach near the German city. They found a “small amount” of explosive material and a “self-built electronic device” that may have been intended as a fuse, police said.

The authorities said there was no immediate connection with a series of al-Qaeda videos aimed at threatening Germany before its Sept. 27 election. Police in the country have tightened security at airports and train stations and this week restricted car traffic at the Oktoberfest in Munich, which draws an average 375,000 people a day through Oct. 4.

Two suspected Islamic extremists were arrested in connection with the Oktoberfest, as authorities determined the 16-day beer festival might be a terror target, police said on Sept. 28.
