July 27 (Bloomberg) -- Supermodel Maggie Rizer and Karina Smirnoff of “Dancing With the Stars” will share a runway in Manhattan tonight with their four-legged companions.
About 25 dogs are set to sashay with the mannequins to help raise money for the Humane Society of New York at the 10th annual “Paws for Style” fashion show. Among the other human models will be “Hair” cast member Sasha Allen
Twenty international designers have contributed outfits, including Josie Natori, Carolina Herrera, Nina Ricci, Rebecca Taylor and Roberto Cavalli.
The show, held in the hip M2 Ultra Lounge, is organized by Animal Fair, a New York-based Web site and lifestyle journal for animal lovers and pet owners that advocates animal rescue.
“It’s important for people to contribute to their local community and to raise money for events,” Wendy Diamond, founder and editor of Animal Fair magazine, said in a phone interview. “Shelters are being flooded with abandoned animals because people can’t afford to feed them.”
The animal couture will include leashes, jackets, a kimono designed by Natori and a Swarovski collar and outfit designed by Keith Lissner, which Diamond hopes will lure a bid of about $400.
“People get really excited about the leashes and collar,” Diamond said. “It’s the most popular thing and it’s the most useful.”
Diamond hopes to match the $70,000 raised at last year’s party. The event’s supporters come from Wall Street and Hollywood as well as pet lovers. The guest list includes actor Renee Zellweger, retired Morgan Stanley executive Anson Beard, Bank of America Merrill Lynch Managing Director Todd B. Richter and animal philanthropist Lady Frances Hayward.
Animals Abandoned
In the past year, the Humane Society has seen a surge in animals abandoned by owners who can no longer afford to care for them, said Sandra DeFeo, co-executive director for the Humane Society of New York.
Diamond, a native of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, was inspired to launch the first charity fashion show for dogs after adopting a Maltese named Lucky. In the past decade, the pet expert and advocate has emerged as a fundraiser for animal causes through “Paws for Style” and has appeared as a judge on the CBS television show ‘Greatest American Dog.”
M2 Ultra, which is donating the space for the fashion show, will serve up “yappytinis and “muttinis,” veggie hot dogs and burgers.
“We don’t want meat on the menu out of respect for the animals,” Diamond said.
Guests are welcome to bring their own pets to the show, and “special arrangements” will be made if an attendee wants to bring an elephant, according to the invitation.
“Paws for Style” will be held tonight, 7 to 9, at M2 Ultra Lounge, 530 W. 28th St. Tickets are $500. Information: http://www.animalfair.com.
