Commonwealth Securities October Global iPod Index (Table)

Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Following is a table listing the U.S. dollar prices of Apple Inc.’s iPod music players in countries and regions around the world from Commonwealth Securities in Sydney.
The CommSec iPod index uses the concept of purchasing power parity which states that the dollar should buy the same amount in all economies. Over time, the exchange rate between two currencies should move towards a rate that equalizes the price of an identical basket of goods and services in each economy.
The iPod index is similar to the concept used for The Economist’s Big Mac index.
Comparing the cost of an iPod in one economy against the price in another should indicate whether a currency is over- or undervalued.
For the most recent month, the price of an iPod Nano with 8 gigabytes has been used. The index was launched in January, 2007 but is not conducted on a regular monthly basis.
