UN Peacekeeping Helicopter Fired on in Northern Congo

By Michael J. Kavanagh

Nov. 26 (Bloomberg) -- A United Nations peacekeeping helicopter was fired on today in northern Democratic Republic of Congo, UN spokesman in Congo Madnoje Mounoubai said by phone from Kinshasa.

The helicopter was trying to land in Dongo when it was were fired on, Mounoubai said.

“The helicopter is now in Impfondo,” across the border in Republic of Congo, he said. “We are still trying to get more information.”

Five people were injured, Agence France-Presse reported, citing an unidentified official at the UN.

Recent fighting in the region of Dongo has killed at least 100 people in an inter-communal conflict that began over fishing rights. Congo sent a unit of police to the region on Nov. 8.

“We don’t have exact numbers yet, but we’re talking about one hundred dead,” Stefania Trassari, spokeswoman for the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said in a press conference in Kinshasa yesterday. “There are still bodies in the streets.”
