Beijing Airport Cancels 80 Flights on Snowstorms (Update2)

By Bloomberg News

Nov. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Beijing Capital International Airport canceled 80 flights today, China Central Television reported, stranding thousands of passengers as the city was hit by the second snowstorm this month.

Flights to cities including Kunming, Xi’an, Changchun, Chongqing and Guangzhou were canceled, CCTV reported. More than 150 flights were delayed, according to the report.

The airport operator has added staff and machinery to remove snow and ice on the ground and aircraft, CCTV said. Stranded passengers crowded around airline check-in counters at China’s busiest airport included Xu Jiamin, a 24-year-old computer engineer, whose flight to Xi’an was canceled.

“In situations like this, what can you do?” he said. “I’ll just wait for the next flight.”

Snow was forecast for provinces in northern China including Hebei, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia in the coming three days, the China Meteorological Administration said on its Web site today. China closed four main highways in the north, CCTV said, citing the Ministry of Transport’s Emergency Office.

Air China Ltd., the nation’s largest international carrier, canceled 25 departures from Beijing, affecting about 2,500 passengers, CCTV reported, citing an Air China official.

Snowfall of more than 10 centimeters (4 inches) was recorded today in Taiyuan and Datong cities in Shanxi, CCTV reported. Flights from Shijiazhuang, Hebei province were also canceled and delayed due to heavy snow, it said.

Chengde, Hebei province, has reported snowfall of 37 centimeters today, according to CCTV.
