Duesseldorf Contemporary Art Fair Is Scrapped Over Slow Sales

By Linda Sandler and Catherine Hickley

Feb. 14 (Bloomberg) -- DC Duesseldorf Contemporary, a one- year-old German art show, said it won't repeat the event this year because local fairs don't attract enough sales.

``All indications are that art-market activity concentrates on a few art fairs with international and not just German significance,'' the organizers said in a statement today.

Art fairs in Basel, Miami and London continue to grow while some smaller fairs are shrinking. Art Cologne said yesterday it is scrapping a sister event on the Spanish island of Majorca. The fair's main event in Cologne drew just 60,000 visitors in April last year, 10,000 fewer than in 2006.

DC Duesseldorf held its premiere in April 2007. The organizers said they are exploring a consolidation with other art fairs.
