Harrods to Offer Champagne at $490 a Glass, Helped by Schiffer

By Richard Vines

Feb. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Harrods plans to create a ground-floor bar in its London department store selling champagne for as much as 250 pounds ($490) a glass. If that doesn't tempt you, the model Claudia Schiffer is scheduled to show up for a drink.

The Dom Perignon Oenotheque bar, which will open on Feb. 11, will offer two vintages by the glass: the 1995 at 65 pounds and the 1975 at 250 pounds, Andre Dang, a spokesman for the store, said today in a telephone interview. Berry Bros. & Rudd is offering the 1975 for 1,000 pounds a bottle on its Web site.

Schiffer, who stars in a video by the designer Karl Lagerfeld for Dom Perignon Oenotheque, is scheduled to visit the store on Feb. 26. Two days later, Dom Perignon's cellar master, Richard Geoffrey, will hold a tasting. The bar will close on March 3.

``Harrods is a luxury department store and Dom Perignon works very well for us as a brand because many of our customers drink it,'' Dang said. ``This is part of our Senses promotion, where we want customers to come in and have a sensory experience.''

The most expensive option available at the Champagne Bar at St. Pancras station is Dom Perignon 1999, at 25 pounds a glass.

Dom Perignon is a brand of Paris-based LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA, the world's largest maker of luxury goods. Harrods Ltd. is privately owned by Mohamed Al-Fayed.
