McCain Raised $47 Million in August, Breaking Monthly Record

By Edwin Chen

Sept. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Republican presidential candidate John McCain raised at least $47 million in August, his best monthly take yet, his campaign said.

``It's over $47 million, and we're still counting,'' said spokesman Brian Rogers at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Rogers said $10 million of that has come in since McCain's Aug. 29 announcement of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate. McCain's previous best monthly total was the $27 million he raised in July. Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's campaign has yet to release its August fundraising figures. In July Obama raised $51 million.

The contributions signal ``a tremendous sign of the enthusiasm and support for'' the Republican ticket, Rogers said.

McCain and Palin are to be formally nominated this week at the convention.

Rogers said the Republican Party and McCain's campaign anticipate having between $224 million and $240 million available going into the fall campaign, including $85 million in public funds that McCain will receive after he officially becomes the Republican nominee. The U.S. presidential election is Nov. 4.
