Jan. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Apple Inc. said it has sold 4 million iPhones, its device that combines a mobile phone with an iPod media player.
The company has averaged 20,000 units a day, Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs said today at the Macworld conference in San Francisco. The company now has almost 20 percent of the so-called smartphone market, Jobs said.
Apple also updated the device's features, letting customers send text messages to more than one person at the same time. The company will deliver the features as part of a free software update today.
Apple sold almost 1.4 million iPhones in the first three months after its U.S. debut on June 29. It began selling the device in the U.K., Germany and France in November, and has said it will offer it to customers in Asia this year.
