Nov. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Two members of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force went missing while on patrol in western Afghanistan, ISAF said today.
The Taliban later said they are holding the soldiers’ bodies, the British Broadcasting Corp. said, citing Reuters.
“We are doing everything we can to find them,” spokeswoman Jane Campbell said in an e-mailed statement. “The families of these service members have been notified about their loved ones’ status.” The soldiers went missing two days ago, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization said.
Further information is being withheld while the search continues, Campbell said. She didn’t give the soldiers’ nationalities or specify the area where they were on patrol.
President Barack Obama’s administration is considering a military request to send more U.S. forces to Afghanistan. The review has been complicated by increased Taliban attacks on government and international targets and by a fraud-tainted presidential election that weakened the legitimacy of incumbent Hamid Karzai.
