Senate Energy Bill Tax Package Defeated on 57-to-36 Vote

By Daniel Whitten

June 21 (Bloomberg) -- Senate Republicans blocked $32.1 billion in tax incentives primarily for renewable energy in a Senate energy bill today.

The 57-36 vote hinders Democrats efforts to fund wind and solar power, renewable fuels and advanced cars. Democrats needed 60 votes to set a deadline to limit debate on the tax plan to no more than 30 hours. A 36-billion-gallon ethanol mandate is still alive in the measure.

``There are still good things in this bill,'' Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told reporters before the vote. ``The tax package makes it tremendously better.''

The Senate followed the vote on the tax package with a 61-32 vote to limit debate on the energy package.

Reid, a Nevada Democrat, said Republicans have created procedural obstacles to get the energy bill through the chamber.

``Republicans don't want the Democrats to accomplish anything,'' Reid said.

Negotiations are still required on automobile fuel economy standards and renewable electricity mandate before the bill can be voted on. The final vote on the bill is expected by Friday.
