Oct. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Sao Paulo Mayor Gilberto Kassab won re-election in Brazil's biggest city as the opposition Democratas party defeated President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's candidate.
Kassab won 60.7 percent of votes, according to preliminary results posted on the electoral court's Web Site after all ballots were counted. Lula's candidate, former tourism minister Marta Suplicy, had 39.3 percent.
In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's second-biggest city, Eduardo Paes was elected mayor with 50.8 percent of the votes. He was running against Fernando Gabeira, who won 49.2 percent with all ballots counted. While both candidates belong to parties within Lula's ruling coalition, the president campaigned for Paes.
About 27 million Brazilians cast their ballots today for runoff municipal votes in 30 cities across the country. Earlier this month voters elected mayors and city council members in most of the nation's 5,563 cities.
