U.S. Tries to Revive Honduras Agreement, New York Times Says

By Joshua Goodman

Nov. 11 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. President Barack Obama sent a senior diplomat to Honduras to revive a U.S.-brokered agreement to resolve the country’s political crisis, the New York Times reported.

Craig Kelly, a deputy U.S. secretary of state for the Western Hemisphere, met ousted President Manuel Zelaya and members of the acting government yesterday to persuade both sides to abide by the terms of an Oct. 30 agreement clearing the way for presidential elections this month, the newspaper said.

That accord unraveled last week after Honduras’ Congress postponed a vote on restoring Zelaya. Zelaya, in protest, refused to submit nominees for a proposed national unity government.

Representative Howard Berman, a California Democrat and chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, called the State Department to complain about the administration’s handling of the crisis, the Times said.

Jose Miguel Insulza, secretary-general of the Organization of American States, said he would not send electoral observers to oversee the vote scheduled for Nov. 29, the newspaper said.
