Mexico Power Outages May Stem From Fired Workers (Update1)

By Carlos Manuel Rodriguez

Oct. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Seven neighborhoods in Mexico’s City metropolitan area lost power after fired Luz y Fuerza del Centro workers turned off a switch to the area, Radio Formula network reported.

The outage is the first confirmed one caused by sabotage, the radio reported today citing unnamed interior ministry officials.

President Felipe Calderon ordered on Oct. 11 the liquidation of Luz y Fuerza, the nation’s second-largest power supplier, firing about 44,000 electricity workers.

Many additional power outages weren’t caused by sabotage, said Alfredo Elias Ayub, chief executive officer of Comision Federal de Electricidad, or CFE, the Mexican largest state power company that took over Luz y Fuerza operations.

Ayub told Radio Formula that CFE is also receiving fake reports of power outages in Mexico City.
