Nov. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez spoke on a mobile phone with a caller he identified as Cuban President Fidel Castro at the Summit for Friendship and Integration of Latin American People.
He was handed the phone by Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage while speaking about overthrown Chilean President Salvador Allende in a stadium in Santiago, according to a Venezuelan government statement. Castro and Chavez conversed, with Chavez repeating Castro's words for the audience, according to the statement.
Castro wasn't heard by the public because no one could get the speakerphone to work, according to the statement. While a caller identified as Castro talked with Chavez live on television Oct. 14, the Cuban leader hasn't appeared in public since undergoing undisclosed medical procedures in July, 2006.
Castro, as repeated by Chavez, remembered Chileans who died in Nicaragua's leftist revolution.
