Coffee Outlook Premature After Honduras Coup, ICO’s Sette Says

By Claudia Carpenter

June 29 (Bloomberg) -- The International Coffee Organization said it was too early to assess the coffee market outlook for Honduras after a military coup in the Central American country yesterday.

ICO Executive Director Nestor Osorio may speak with Honduran coffee officials today, said Jose Sette, head of operations in London. “It’s much too premature to speculate at this time,” he said.

Honduras will produce 3.6 million bags, each weighing 60 kilograms (132 pounds), in the 2008-09 crop year, down from 3.8 million a year earlier, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The country exported 377,694 bags in April, according to the London-based ICO. All of Honduras’s coffee exports are arabica beans.

Newly appointed president Roberto Micheletti has called on other nations to respect the ouster of Manuel Zelaya.
