Sarkozy Support Sinks 10 Points to 39%, Ipsos Says (Update1)

By James Hertling and Fabio Benedetti-Valentini

Feb. 11 (Bloomberg) -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy's popularity sank to its lowest since he took office in May, according to a survey by Ipsos SA.

Sarkozy's approval rating dropped 10 points to 39 percent from January, the Paris-based pollster reported today. The proportion of voters dissatisfied with him rose 9 points to 58 percent. Ipsos questioned 944 people on Feb. 8 and 9. No margin of error was published.

A separate poll from CSA shows that Sarkozy's rating fell 5 points to 47 percent from 52 percent a month earlier, Le Figaro reported today, without providing margin of errors for the study.

The surveys were the latest to plot a slide in Sarkozy's approval ratings amid growing concern over household purchasing power and publicity surrounding his relationship with model- turned-singer Carla Bruni. The two were married on Feb. 2. Polls published in recent weeks by Ifop, LH2, BVA, and TNS-Sofres showed his popularity sinking.

In contrast, Prime Minister Francois Fillon's popularity climbed 7 points to 52 percent, today's Ipsos survey showed.
