Kinross Gold, Suncor, West Fraser Timber: Canada Equity Preview

Nov. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Shares of the following companies may have unusual moves in Canadian trading. Stock symbols are in parentheses.

The Standard & Poor’s/TSX Composite Index fell for a second day yesterday, losing 32.40 points, or 0.3 percent, to 10,878.35.

Canadian National Railway Co. (CNR CN) and Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. (CP CN): Berkshire Hathaway Inc. agreed to buy U.S. railroad Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp., paying a per-share premium of 31 percent over Burlington’s closing price yesterday. CN and CP are North America’s fifth- and sixth-largest railroads, respectively.

Kinross Gold Corp. (K CN): Canada’s third-largest gold producer said it broke even, excluding certain items, in the third quarter, compared with the average analyst estimate of 12 cents a share.

Red Back Mining Inc. (RBI CN): The gold producer with mines in Africa is scheduled to report third-quarter earnings before the market opens. The average estimate among 10 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg is for a profit of 13 cents a share.

Suncor Energy Inc. (SU CN): Canada’s largest energy company had its rating increased to “buy” from “hold” by analyst Philip R. Skolnick of Genuity Capital Markets, who cited the stock’s 11 percent decline since being downgraded to “hold” on June 1.

Talisman Energy Inc. (TLM CN): The oil and gas producer with operations on four continents and the North Sea reported third-quarter profit of 10 cents a share, excluding certain items, beating the average estimate of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg by 11 percent.

West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. (WFT CN): The lumber company said it had a loss of 78 cents a share, excluding certain items, in the third quarter, 31 percent narrower than the average analyst estimate of a $1.13 loss. The company said operating results are likely to improve in the fourth quarter due to strong demand and pulp pricing.
