By Alexandre Deslongchamps

Dec. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Oscar Peterson, a Canadian jazz pianist who played with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington and Nat King Cole, died yesterday, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. He was 82.

Peterson died in his Mississauga, Ontario, home near Toronto, CBC said. Peterson was born in Montreal in 1925, and later made Toronto his home, the television channel reported.

Peterson began playing with the Johnny Holmes Orchestra, Canada's leading big band, in 1942, CBC said. He got a ``big break'' in 1949 when he was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall with some of the biggest names in jazz and was touring the world by the 1950s. Peterson rose to prominence with his Oscar Peterson Trio and was featured in two movies.

According to CBC, Peterson had been married four times and had six children from his first and third marriages: Lyn, Sharon, Gay, Oscar Jr., Norman and Joel. He also had a daughter, Celine, with his fourth wife, Kelly.
