Brambles Industries Profit Advances on U.S. Pallets (Update2)

By Brian McGee

Nov. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Brambles Industries Ltd., the world's biggest supplier of pallets used to move and store goods, said fiscal first-quarter profit and sales advanced at its pallet-hire and document archiving divisions, led by demand in the U.S.

Revenue at pallets business CHEP rose 6 percent in the three months through September, with U.S. sales gaining 10 percent, the Sydney-based company said today. Revenue at Recall, the archive division, advanced by 18 percent.

``Brambles' sales and profits from the continuing businesses of CHEP and Recall were well ahead,'' the company said in a statement. ``The outlook for Brambles remains positive.''

Chief Executive Officer David Turner sold half the company this year to focus on CHEP, whose customers include General Motors Corp. and Procter & Gamble Co. Operating profit at the division advanced 56 percent in the Americas, the unit's biggest region by sales.

Shares of Brambles, which held its annual investor meeting in London today, have risen 23 percent this year, giving the company a market value of A$12 billion ($9.3 billion). Its U.K.- listed stock closed 0.8 percent higher at 497.25 pence today.

Investors voted on Brambles' plan to combine its dual-listed stock structure by buying back London-traded shares and keeping only its primary Australian stock. No statement on the vote had been released as of the close of trading in London. A separate shareholder meeting will take place in Australia next week.

Buyout firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. in June bought Cleanaway Australia and New Zealand and Brambles Industrial Services from the company for A$1.83 billion, gaining Australia's largest trash collector. The disposal of Cleanaway's Asian business to Veolia Environnement SA followed last month.
