May 2 (Bloomberg) -- Mia Farrow, the actress who is leading the protest group Dream for Darfur, said China, Britain and other United Nations Security Council members must provide military support to peacekeepers in the Sudanese region.
``Nations with capable armies should offer African nations training, logistical support and helicopters,'' to help end the conflict that has killed as many as 300,000 people, she said in a talk at the Hong Kong Foreign Correspondents' Club today.
China can persuade Sudan to allow the full deployment of peacekeepers because it is the country's top trading partner, said Farrow, a goodwill ambassador for the UN Children's Fund. Negotiations aimed at ending the violence that began in February 2003 have stalled and a joint UN and African Union peacekeeping mission has sent just 9,200 personnel to Darfur out of a planned 26,000 soldiers and civilian police.
China is using its ``good relationship'' with the Sudanese government to push for a political solution to the conflict, the country's special envoy to Darfur Liu Guijin said March 7. ``No country has expressed willingness to provide helicopters, including Western countries,'' Liu said.
Farrow said she is also pressing the U.K. and U.S. to do more, stating that ``even my lampshade,'' would do better than the current administration in Washington.
Farrow also called for a boycott of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games to send a message that China's policies are not acceptable, and said she planned to broadcast a concert live from Darfur during the Games.
Campaign Songs
``We'll encourage TV viewers to watch us during the commercial breaks,'' she said, adding that ``recording artists of repute,'' are being asked to give her campaign songs.
``She should get a clearer understanding of China's positive and constructive role in resolving the Darfur issue,'' Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said April 29 of Farrow, noting that China has sent food and built and repaired roads and schools in the region, as well as establishing a special envoy.
Farrow also called for a boycott of Olympic sponsors including Coca-Cola Co., and said that her campaign has not been disrespectful of China.
