India Reduces Australia to 337-9 as Test Cricket Series Opens

By Dan Baynes

Dec. 26 (Bloomberg) -- India captain Anil Kumble took five wickets to reduce Australia to 337-9 on day one of the first cricket Test in Melbourne.

Kumble rallied his team by dismissing Phil Jaques, Michael Hussey, Andrew Symonds, Adam Gilchrist and Brett Lee after Australia had advanced to 135 without loss. Zaheer Khan took three wickets, while RP Singh got the other.

Leg-spinner Kumble's 35th five-wicket haul in elite Tests helped swing the momentum India's way on the opening day of the four-match series as it seeks to snap top-ranked Australia's 14- Test winning streak.

Matthew Hayden top scored for Australia with 124, his sixth century in the past seven Tests at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and his 28th in total. Fellow opener Jaques made 66.

Mitchell Johnson will resume on 10 tomorrow, with Stuart Clark on 21. Their last-wicket stand is worth 25 runs so far.

Away from the playing arena, Cricket Australia said former Test wicket world record holder Shane Warne agreed to take a development role with the country's spin bowlers.

Warne, who retired from Tests in January with a then-record 708 wickets, will also join the governing body's playing conditions committee, which makes recommendations to the International Cricket Council about the sport's development.

``I have got some thoughts on the game that I can bring to that group,'' said the 38-year-old Warne, whose wicket record was surpassed by Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan on Dec. 3.
