London May Get NFL Team in Future, League Commissioner Says

By Alessandro Poggi

Oct. 23 (Bloomberg) -- The National Football League may put an expansion team in London, commissioner Roger Goodell said today.

The league is holding its third match in the city this weekend, and Goodell, speaking at the Global Sport Summit conference here, said the league may eventually establish a base in London. The New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers play in two days time at Wembley Stadium.

“Ultimately where it ends up? I think it’s very practical, if the interest continues to grow, that we could have an NFL franchise in London,” Goodell said. A franchise might move or the league could establish a new team, he said.

London has hosted several games as the league attempts to increase its fan base outside the U.S. The NFL shut its European development Europa league in 2007 after annual losses of as much as $40 million. The league is being broadcast by British Sky Broadcasting Group Plc’s Sky Sports, the U.K.’s Channel 5 and the British Broadcasting Corp.

A London franchise would also open up the possibility of playing the Super Bowl in the city, he said. The league will add several regular season games in the country before establishing a local team, he said. Those events may be played outside of London.
