Alabama Claims No. 1 Spot in College Football's BCS Standings

By Vince Golle

Nov. 2 (Bloomberg) -- The University of Alabama took over the No. 1 spot in college football's Bowl Championship Series standings after Texas Tech's last-second upset of the University of Texas.

The Crimson Tide, ranked second last week, improved to 9-0 after a 35-0 win over Arkansas State yesterday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In Lubbock, Texas, Graham Harrell's 28-yard touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree gave Texas Tech a 39-33 win over former No. 1 Texas at Jones AT&T Stadium.

That victory moves the Red Raiders, last week's seventh- ranked team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's top division, to No. 2 in the BCS standings that determine which teams will play for the championship in January. It also thrusts unbeaten Texas Tech into the middle of the national title hunt. Penn State is No. 3, the Longhorns dropped to No. 4 and Florida rounds out the top five.

``I thought we had a really good week of preparation and the excitement of the students, campus, and all the coverage with a team as good as Texas,'' Texas Tech coach Mike Leach said last night.

Fans poured onto the field after Crabtree caught a sideline pass from Harrell at the Texas five-yard line, eluded a tackle and ran into the end zone with one second remaining. It marked Texas Tech's first win against a top-ranked team and gave the Raiders their first 9-0 start since 1938.

Alabama has a BCS rating of .975, with a possible score of 1.000, after gaining 200 rushing yards for the fifth time this year. Freshman running back Mark Ingram scored twice and had 113 yards on 12 carries.

Alabama visits 16th-ranked Louisiana State University on Nov. 8 before hosting unranked Mississippi State and Auburn.

BCS Ratings

Texas, after playing its fourth-straight ranked opponent, has a BCS rating of .853. Texas Tech is second at .937 and Penn State, which was idle this weekend, is third at .929. Florida (7-1) is fifth at .827.

The two teams that finish the regular season atop the BCS standings will play for the national championship on Jan. 8 in Miami. The BCS standings are determined using the USA Today coaches' poll, the Harris Interactive poll and six computer rankings. The final standings will be released Dec. 7. Six of the top 10 teams in this week's rankings are from the Big 12 and Southeastern conferences.

The remainder of the schedule for Texas Tech includes No. 9 Oklahoma State in Lubbock on Nov. 8, a visit to No. 6 Oklahoma on Nov. 22 and a home game against Baylor on Nov. 29. Texas hosts Baylor, visits Kansas, and finishes the season at home against rival Texas A&M.

Five Touchdowns

Florida beat Georgia (7-2) 49-10 in Jacksonville, Florida, behind five touchdowns from quarterback Tim Tebow. Last year's winner of the Heisman Trophy, awarded to the best player in college football, Tebow passed for 154 yards and ran for 39 yards as the Gators moved up from eighth in the BCS standings.

The Bulldogs, who were ranked sixth last week, slipped to 13th in the nation.

Sixth-ranked Oklahoma (8-1) scored five touchdowns in the first quarter en route to a 62-28 victory over Nebraska in Norman, Oklahoma. Sooners quarterback Sam Bradford threw for 311 yards and five scores.

Seventh-ranked USC (7-1) battered the winless Washington Huskies 56-0 by rushing for 297 yards in Los Angeles.

Utah is eighth in the BCS standings, followed by Oklahoma State, Boise State, Ohio State, Texas Christian, Georgia, Missouri, Brigham Young, LSU, Ball State, Michigan State, North Carolina and Georgia Tech.
