Panthers Suspend Steve Smith 2 Games After Fight With Teammate

By Bob Bensch

Aug. 2 (Bloomberg) -- The Carolina Panthers suspended wide receiver Steve Smith for the first two regular-season games after he fought with cornerback Ken Lucas at training camp yesterday.

Smith, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, will still be allowed to practice and play in the team's preseason games. Lucas suffered a broken nose in the altercation, coach John Fox said.

``What he did was wrong, we take it very serious, and he's being punished severely for it,'' Fox said in comments on the Panthers' Web site.

Smith and Lucas were on the sidelines without helmets when the fight started, the Charlotte Observer reported. Lucas then went to the locker room with an ice pack on his left eye, the newspaper said.

``He's doing fine,'' Fox said of Lucas today. ``Physically, it could have been worse, not that a broken nose is not bad enough.''

Lucas didn't practice today and Fox said he didn't know when he would return.

Smith caught 87 passes for 1,002 yards and seven touchdowns last season. He'll miss the season opener at San Diego on Sept. 7 and the home opener seven days later against Chicago.
