Steelers Extend Roethlisberger; Faneca Joins Jets (Update3)

By Aaron Kuriloff

March 3 (Bloomberg) -- The Pittsburgh Steelers signed an eight-year contract extension with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and lost free-agent guard Alan Faneca to the New York Jets on the fourth day of the National Football League's free-agency period.

Randy Moss re-signed with the New England Patriots after setting an NFL-record with 23 touchdowns in his first season with the team, while the New York Giants added safety Sammy Knight, who is third among active players with 42 career interceptions.

Roethlisberger's contract with the Steelers totals $102 million, with more than $36 million guaranteed, making him one of the league's highest-paid players, ESPN said, citing people it didn't identify. No financial details of the deal were released in a statement from the team or at a televised news conference with Roethlisberger, who said he wanted to ``finish my career in the black and gold.''

``Now we can focus on putting a bunch more trophies in that room behind us,'' he said.

Roethlisberger, who turned 26 yesterday, earned a Pro Bowl berth this season after throwing a team-record 32 touchdown passes. He led the Steelers to the American Football Conference North Division title and a third trip to the playoffs in his fourth season as quarterback. Roethlisberger and the Steelers won the Super Bowl title after the 2005 season.

Roethlisberger has compiled a 39-16 record with the Steelers since the team selected him with the 11th pick in the 2004 NFL draft. Pittsburgh today also signed free-agent running back Mewelde Moore to a three-year contract. Moore played the past four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.

Faneca's Move

The Steelers couldn't hang on to Faneca. The seven-time Pro Bowl selection joined the Jets after a decade in Pittsburgh.

Faneca, the 26th selection in the 1998 draft, has played in 158 NFL games and started 11 postseason contests, including the Super Bowl. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed in a statement from the Jets. The Associated Press reported that Faneca's contract lasts five years and is worth $40 million, with $21 million guaranteed.

``Alan is regarded as one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL,'' Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum said in a statement. ``We made our interest in him known from the beginning of free agency.''

Jets' Other Acquisitions

The Jets also added two other free agents, linebacker Calvin Pace and Pro Bowl guard Damien Woody.

Pace, who spent the past five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, signed a six-year, $42 million contract with $22 million guaranteed, according to NFL.com.

Woody, who has played for the Detroit Lions since 2004, won Super Bowls as a member of the New England Patriots after the 2001 and 2003 seasons. He signed a five-year, $25.5 million deal that includes $11 million guaranteed, the league's Web site said.

Moss will get $27 million from the Patriots over the next three seasons, including a $12 million signing bonus, the Boston Globe reported, citing a person close to Moss it didn't identify.

Moss, 31, joined the Patriots in a trade before last season and caught 98 passes for 1,493 yards and broke Jerry Rice's 20- year-old record for touchdown catches.

``What Randy did for our team last year was outstanding,'' Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. ``He is one of our most consistent, competitive and team-oriented players and it is undoubtedly a relationship we are excited to continue.''

Giants Add Knight

Knight, who had a career-high 132 tackles for Jacksonville last season, helps the Giants offset the loss of Gibril Wilson. The starting safety for the Super Bowl champion Giants, Wilson signed with Oakland on the first day of the free agent period.

``We feel like with his love of the game and his attitude about the idea of team that he'll be a real nice fit for us,'' Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. ``Sammy gives us another quality veteran who will definitely help our young guys in their development.''

Elsewhere in the league, the Atlanta Falcons cut running back Warrick Dunn, one day after signing a multiyear contract with free-agent back Michael Turner. Dunn, 33, spent six seasons with the Falcons, who led the league in rushing for three consecutive years from 2004 through 2006.

The Falcons went 4-12 last season and ranked 26th out of 32 teams in rushing yardage.

Dunn, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, is the only active running back with more than 10,000 yards rushing and 4,000 yards receiving, the team said.

Griese Joins Tampa

The Chicago Bears traded quarterback Brian Griese to Tampa Bay for an undisclosed draft choice in 2009. Griese is a 10-year NFL veteran who played for the Buccaneers during the 2004 and 2005 seasons, and earned a Pro Bowl selection with Denver in 2000.

The Bucs now have five active quarterbacks on their roster: Griese, starter Jeff Garcia and reserves Luke McCown, Bruce Gradkowski and Chris Simms. Tampa Bay also owns the rights to quarterback Jake Plummer, who did not play last season.
