June 29 (Bloomberg) -- Craig Biggio of the Houston Astros recorded his 3,000th hit in last night's 8-5 extra-inning win over Colorado, becoming the 27th player in Major League Baseball history to reach the milestone.
Also yesterday, Frank Thomas of the Toronto Blue Jays became the 21st player with 500 career home runs.
Biggio came into the home game three hits short of 3,000 and had his first five-hit game of the season. He had singles in the third and fifth innings at Houston's Minute Maid Park before reaching the mark in the seventh, when he was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.
The 41-year-old Biggio, in his 20th season with Houston, was surrounded by his teammates after hit No. 3,000, while the crowd gave him a standing ovation. Biggio added singles in the ninth and 11th innings to move past Roberto Clemente for 26th place all-time with 3,002 hits. Al Kaline is 25th with 3,007.
``I couldn't have scripted it any better,'' Biggio said at a televised post-game news conference. ``I love these fans, I love this city. We've worked hard here and they appreciate it.''
The Astros won last night's game on a grand slam by Carlos Lee in the bottom of the 11th inning. The homer came after Troy Tulowitzki's solo homer in the top of the inning had given the Rockies a 5-4 lead.
Biggio is just the ninth player to collect 3,000 hits for the same franchise and has more hits than any active player. Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants is second among active players with 2,896 hits.
Thomas Hits 500th
Thomas, 39, reached the 500-homer milestone with a three- run shot off Minnesota's Carlos Silva in the top of the first inning at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. The two-time American League Most Valuable Player also had a run-scoring double before being ejected in the ninth inning of Minnesota's 8-5 victory for arguing with home plate umpire Mark Wegner.
``I'm probably the first to get 500 home runs and get thrown out of the ball game,'' Thomas said at a news conference. ``But it means a lot to me because I've done it the right way. I've always worked hard in the weight room to be strong and I've been blessed with this talent.''
A five-time All-Star, Thomas has had nine seasons with 30 or more home runs and won the AL batting title in 1997 with a .347 average. He has 13 homers this season, his first with Toronto.
The New York Yankees had yesterday's game against the Baltimore Orioles suspended by rain as they held an 8-6 lead in the top of the eighth inning. The game will resume at the point it was stopped on July 27, the Yankees' next trip to Camden Yards. The Yankees now return home after a 1-7 road trip that's dropped them to 36-39.
The New York Mets were rained out against the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday.
Phillies Edge Closer
The Philadelphia Phillies pulled within three games of the first-place Mets in the National League's Eastern Division by edging the Cincinnati Reds 8-7 on a run-scoring single by Jimmy Rollins in the bottom of the 10th inning. Chase Utley hit a pair of two-run homers for the Phillies, who host a four-game series against the Mets starting with today's day-night doubleheader.
In yesterday's other NL results, the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-5 and the Florida Marlins topped the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-7.
In the American League, the Cleveland Indians beat the Oakland Athletics 4-3, the Detroit Tigers defeated the Texas Rangers 5-2, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 5-1 to complete a four-game sweep.
