Nov. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Flavia Pennetta beat U.S. teenager Melanie Oudin in straight sets today as Italy swept the final of tennis’s Fed Cup 4-0.
In today’s final rubber, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci beat the U.S.’s Liezel Huber and Vania King 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 on clay in Reggio Calabria, Italy. The final singles match was scrapped.
It was Italy’s second title and first victory over the U.S., the record 17-time champion of the top team competition in women’s tennis. The American team was missing Venus and Serena Williams.
Eleventh-ranked Pennetta beat U.S. Open quarterfinalist Oudin 7-5, 6-2 to clinch the title.
“I could have played better on some points,” Oudin told the Fed Cup Web site. “Some day, when I’m in the Fed Cup final again, I hope I’ll be able to” win.
Italy also won in 2006, beating Belgium in the final.
