Sept. 28 (Bloomberg) -- The University of Oklahoma moved atop the Associated Press Top 25 college football poll for the first time since 2003 after a week in which four top-10 teams were defeated.

The Sooners, who beat TCU 35-10 yesterday, climbed one spot to No. 1, a position they've held a record 96 times since the AP poll began in 1936. USC (2-1), last week's top-ranked team, dropped to No. 9 in the poll of U.S. sportswriters and broadcasters after losing 27-21 to Oregon State on Sept. 25.

Oklahoma (4-0) received 43 of a possible 65 first-place votes for 1,599 points, while No. 2 Alabama (21 first-place votes) climbed six places after a 41-30 thumping of Georgia last night. The Bulldogs fell eight spots to 11th.

LSU moved to third from fifth after a 34-24 win over Mississippi State. Missouri, which didn't play this week, climbed two spots to fourth. Texas rounded out the top five after a 52-10 win over Arkansas.

Penn State climbed to sixth from 12th after a 38-24 win over Illinois. Texas Tech was idle and moved up three spots to seventh, followed by Brigham Young in eighth and South Florida in 10th.

Florida dropped eight spots to 12th after a 31-30 home loss to Mississippi, and is followed by Auburn, Ohio State and Utah.

Kansas is 16th, followed by Boise State, Wisconsin, and Vanderbilt at 19th.

Six Big 12 Conference teams are now ranked in the top 25 with four in the top 10.

Virginia Tech, at 20th, was one of four teams entering the poll, joined by Oklahoma State at 21st, Oregon at 23rd and Connecticut at 24th. Fresno State was 22nd, while Wake Forest fell nine spots to 25th after a 24-17 home loss to Navy.
