Feb. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Barry Bonds’s former trainer, Greg Anderson, must appear at a hearing in federal court Feb. 25 to disclose whether he will testify at the former San Francisco Giant’s perjury trial, a judge ordered.
U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston scheduled the hearing “to determine whether Greg Anderson will testify,” according to an order posted today. Anderson’s attorney has said the trainer won’t appear as a witness at Bonds’s trial on charges that he lied about taking steroids.
Illston yesterday threw out positive drug tests and other key government evidence against Bonds, saying prosecutors can’t use them without verification from Anderson. The former trainer should be jailed for the duration of Bonds’s trial, which starts March 2, if he refuses to testify, prosecutors said in court filings.
Bonds has pleaded not guilty.
The case is U.S. v. Bonds, 07-CR-00732, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California (San Francisco).
