Cowboys' Terrell Owens Attempted Suicide, Reports Say (Update2)

By Larry DiTore and Erik Matuszewski

Sept. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens attempted suicide last night by overdosing on prescription painkillers, according to a police report obtained by WFAA-TV and the Dallas Morning News.

Dallas police refused to comment on the report at a news conference. Spokesman Rick Watson only said paramedics notified police that they were taking Owens to the hospital. Watson said a report distributed to the press had details blacked out because of privacy laws and medical issues.

``It's my understanding that there was some information that was released prior to me speaking to the media,'' Watson said. ``How that information got out, I don't know.''

Owens, 32, has been one of the NFL's top receivers during his 11-year career, scoring 102 touchdowns and making five Pro Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles. He signed with Dallas after he was banned from the Eagles last season for clashing with management. He broke a finger Sept. 17, and the team said he would be out for two to four weeks.

Owens is scheduled to hold a news conference at his home in Dallas later today. Former Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin, now a NFL analyst for ESPN, spoke with Owens today and said Owens denied trying to commit suicide.

``He said, `I mistakenly took a lot of supplements with painkillers and I took too many of them,''' Irvin said in a televised interview on ESPN.

Cowboys Reaction

The Cowboys said in a statement they're trying to determine the facts regarding Owens's medical condition.

``Our concerns right now are for his health and well being,'' the team said in a statement. ``When we have additional information on Terrell's condition as it relates to his playing status, we will share it with you.''

Dallas, which has a 1-1 record, visits the Tennessee Titans this week. Cowboys coach Bill Parcells was with the team this morning at practice and said he hasn't yet talked with Owens.

``I don't think something of this nature is what I would term a distraction,'' Parcells said at a news conference. ``It's an unfortunate set of circumstances, and I'd like to be clear on what they are.''

35 Pills

According to the police report obtained by WFAA-TV and the Dallas Morning News, Owens took up to 35 painkiller pills that had been prescribed on Sept. 18, the same day he had surgery to repair a broken finger. The police report said Owens told paramedics he was depressed and was trying to harm himself.

A friend saw Owens take at least two pills and tried to pry the pills from his mouth. She called the paramedics, according to the report.

Police asked Owens if he had taken the rest of the prescription and he said ``Yes,'' according to the report on WFAA-TV and the Morning News Web sites. Owens was then asked if he was attempting to harm himself, and he again answered ``Yes.''

Owens was treated at Baylor Medical Center for a drug overdose, according to the police report. He was released this afternoon, ESPN said.

Owens's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, didn't return a message left at his office.

Owens was once suspended from the 49ers for celebrating a touchdown on the Cowboys' midfield logo in Dallas. Another time after scoring, he pulled a marker from his sock in the end zone and autographed the ball.
