Alabama Reclaims No. 2 Spot in BCS Standings Behind Florida

By Erik Matuszewski

Nov. 8 (Bloomberg) -- The University of Alabama reclaimed the No. 2 spot in college football’s Bowl Championship Series standings behind top-ranked Florida following yesterday’s 24-15 win over Louisiana State.

Alabama slipped to third and Texas moved up a spot to No. 2 in the previous standings, when the Crimson Tide had a bye week. Alabama (9-0) climbed back over the Longhorns this week by defeating a LSU team that had one loss and was ranked ninth in the BCS standings.

The Crimson Tide’s victory also clinched the Southeastern Conference’s West Division title and a meeting with the Florida Gators in the SEC championship game. The Gators (9-0) are atop the BCS standings for the fourth straight week after beating Vanderbilt yesterday 27-3. Texas is third, also at 9-0, following a 35-3 win over Central Florida.

The BCS standings determine the schools to play for the national championship on Jan. 7 in Pasadena, California. The BCS is determined using the USA Today coaches’ poll, the Harris Interactive poll and six computer rankings. The final standings will be released Dec. 6.

Florida has a BCS rating of .984 out of 1.000, while Alabama is .951 and Texas is .923.

Texas Christian is fourth with a .862 rating, ahead of fellow 9-0 teams Cincinnati and Boise State. The highest-ranked one-loss team is Georgia Tech (9-1) at seventh. LSU (7-2), Southern California (7-2) and Iowa (9-1) round out the top 10.

Iowa suffered its first loss of the season yesterday, a 17- 10 defeat against Northwestern that dropped the Hawkeyes six spots from fourth.
