April 30 (Bloomberg) -- Heisman Trophy winners Tim Brown and Gino Torretta are among 16 former players and two coaches elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.
This year’s class, presented by the National Football Foundation, also includes former University of Southern California coach John Robinson and All-American defensive end Grant Wistrom from the University of Nebraska.
Brown, 42, captured the 1987 Heisman Trophy at the University of Notre Dame, as a wide receiver. The two-time first team All-American set 19 Notre Dame records. He was fourth in National Football League history with 1,094 receptions.
Torretta, 38, won the 1992 Heisman after leading the University of Miami to a national championship. He played briefly in the NFL, throwing 16 career passes, and now works as a manager of institutional sales for Gamco Investors Inc. in Miami.
The 73-year-old Robinson coached USC to the 1978 national championship, five Pacific-10 titles and four Rose Bowl victories. Former Syracuse University and University of Massachusetts coach Dick MacPherson was also elected in this year’s class.
Wistrom, a two-time unanimous first-team All-American, led the Huskers to three national championships and was a two-time Big 12 Conference defensive player of the year.
Others inducted are: Pervis Atkins (New Mexico State), Chuck Cecil (Arizona), Ed Dyas (Auburn), Major Harris (West Virginia), Gordon Hudson (Brigham Young), William Lewis (Harvard), Woodrow Lowe (Alabama), Ken Margerum (Stanford), Steve McMichael (Texas), Chris Spielman (Ohio State), Larry Station (Iowa), Pat Swilling (Georgia Tech), and Curt Warner (Penn State).
The group will be officially enshrined at the Hall of Fame in South Bend, Indiana, on July 17-18.
