Ortiz, Ramirez Were on 2003 Doping List, New York Times Says

By Curtis Eichelberger

July 30 (Bloomberg) -- Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz were among about 100 Major League Baseball Players who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003, the New York Times reported, citing unnamed lawyers with knowledge of the results.

Ramirez, who was suspended for 50 games in May while with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Ortiz helped the Boston Red Sox end an 86-year championship drought with World Series wins in 2004 and another in 2007.

While baseball first tested for steroids in 2003, the results were supposed to remain anonymous. The list wasn’t destroyed and became known after federal agents investigating the distribution of performance-enhancing steroids seized it, the newspaper reported.

Five other players, including Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez and Sammy Sosa, have been connected to the positive test results from that year, the Times said.
