Chelsea Beats Manchester United to Extend League Lead (Update1)

By James Cone

Nov. 8 (Bloomberg) -- John Terry scored as Chelsea beat Manchester United 1-0 to stretch its lead over the defending Premier League champion to five points.

Terry’s 76th minute goal maintained Chelsea’s record of winning every game at its Stamford Bridge stadium this season. The Blues have scored 26 times and allowed only one goal at home in all competitions.

“We beat a very good opponent,” Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti told Sky Sports. “Now we have to maintain this gap.”

Chelsea moves to 30 points from 12 games, with Arsenal and United on 25 points. Arsenal, which has played one less game, is second because of a superior goal difference. Fourth-place Tottenham is a further three points back.

Yesterday, Arsenal won 4-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Tottenham defeated Sunderland 2-0.

In today’s other games, Hull City beat Stoke City 2-1, Everton won 2-1 at West Ham, while Wigan and Fulham drew 1-1.

Chelsea captain Terry headed in from a Frank Lampard freekick, awarded for a foul on Ashley Cole by Darren Fletcher. It leaves United without a league win at Chelsea since April 2002.

We had “some really good chances, but we should be finishing it off,” United coach Alex Ferguson told Sky Sports. “We’ve only ourselves to blame in that respect.”

Terry got Chelsea’s goal today to leave United without a league victory at Stamford Bridge since April 2002. He headed in from a Frank Lampard freekick, awarded for a foul on Ashley Cole by Darren Fletcher.

United had most of the possession in the first half without creating many clear chances, while Chelsea struggled to test Edwin van der Sar.

Both teams started to test the goalkeepers after the interval, although mostly from long range. United’s Wayne Rooney fired just wide after 67 minutes, before forcing Petr Cech to tip a curling 20-yard effort behind a minutes later.

Terry put the ball into the opposite net 10 minutes later and United was unable to respond. There was a flurry of yellow cards in the latter stages as tempers flared.

At the other end of the standings, Hull moved out of the three-team relegation positions with an injury-time goal by substitute Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink securing a win against Stoke. West Ham drops one place below the Tigers to 18th following its home defeat to Everton.

Seyi Olofinjana also scored as Hull rallied from a goal behind at halftime at the KC Stadium. Stoke, which took a 29th- minute lead on a strike from Matthew Etherington, finished the match with 10 men as Abdoulaye Faye got a red card with three minutes remaining.

Everton ended a four-match winless run in the league with goals from Louis Saha and Dan Gosling at West Ham. An own goal by Toffees defender Tony Hibbert then gave the Hammers an opportunity of getting back into the game.

Fulham and Wigan remain 11th and 12th, separated by one point, as they drew. Emmerson Boyce put Wigan ahead, with Clint Dempsey replying from the penalty spot.

Yesterday, Aston Villa thrashed Bolton 5-1, Burnley held Manchester City to a 3-3 draw, while Blackburn beat Portsmouth 3-1.
