David Beckham Boosts Income With Move to Galaxy (Update1)

By Tariq Panja

Nov. 6 (Bloomberg) -- David Beckham’s income from endorsements rose 16 percent after his first season with the Los Angeles Galaxy, according to the accounts of his London-based company.

The soccer player earned 9.97 million pound ($16.5 million) in 2008 as the highest-paid director of his Footwork Productions Ltd. That was an increase of 91 percent from the previous year, the company said today in a corporate filing.

Revenue rose to 12.1 million pounds. The income doesn’t include his $5.5 million base salary and other benefits from the Galaxy, as well as a revenue sharing deal he and his wife Victoria have with Coty Inc., the world’s largest fragrance company.

The directors are “pleased” with the results, the company said in a statement in the accounts that were posted at Companies House.

Footwork gets income from Beckham’s endorsements with Adidas AG, Motorola Inc. and Newell Rubbermaid Inc.’s Sharpie pen company. It also includes the final payments from a deal with PepsiCo Inc. that wasn’t renewed. The former England captain’s deals with Italian fashion house Giorgio Armani SpA and Procter & Gamble Co.’s Gillette brand have also ended as Beckham’s advisors plot new endorsement strategies.

Revenue Sharing Contracts

19 Entertainment, who represent the star, are focusing on securing further revenue-sharing contracts. They’ve started negotiations with companies in the drinks, beauty and fashion sectors.

The Galaxy has sold around 300,000 team shirts since signing Beckham in July 2007, and ticket sales have also risen. The 34-year-old’s cut of those funds isn’t on Footwork’s balance sheet. Those sums are paid into U.K.-based business Brand Beckham Ltd.

Beckham joined the Galaxy from Real Madrid in a five-year deal estimated to be worth as much as $250 million in salary and marketing spin-offs. Last week, he agreed to return to Italy for a second loan spell with AC Milan in January. He’s also hoping to play in fourth straight World cup with England next year.

In March, France Football magazine announced Beckham was soccer’s best-paid player for the fifth time in his career, with an annual income of 32.4 million euros.

Beckham will line up for the Galaxy this weekend for the second match of the team’s playoff match with Chivas. The first game finished 2-2.
