Oklahoma, Florida to Play for College Football Title (Update1)

By Erik Matuszewski

Dec. 7 (Bloomberg) -- The University of Oklahoma and the University of Florida will play for college football’s national title after finishing atop the season’s final Bowl Championship Series standings.

The BCS championship game is scheduled for Jan. 8 in Miami and is the last of this year’s 34 bowls.

Oklahoma and Florida both have 12-1 records and beat out five other one-loss teams from the six BCS-affiliated conferences and two undefeated schools from non-BCS leagues to finish 1-2 in the standings.

Oklahoma won the Big 12 championship yesterday with a 62-21 victory over Missouri, while Florida was a 31-20 winner over previously undefeated and No. 1-ranked Alabama in the Southeastern Conference title game. Oklahoma took over the top spot in the BCS standings with Alabama’s loss, while Florida climbed up two spots from its No. 4 ranking last week.

“You never know when it’s out of your control,” Florida coach Urban Meyer said of getting a spot in the BCS title game in a televised interview. “But I felt fairly confident after beating No. 1 Alabama.”

The top two teams in the final BCS standings automatically qualify for the championship game. Florida won the BCS title after the 2006 season, while Oklahoma’s last championship came in 2000. The Sooners lost national championship games after the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

Other Bowls

In this season’s other BCS bowls, it’s the University of Southern California (11-1) against Penn State (11-1) in the Rose Bowl, Utah (12-0) against Alabama (12-1) in the Sugar Bowl, Texas (11-1) against Ohio State (10-2) in the Fiesta Bowl and Virginia Tech (9-4) against Cincinnati (11-2) in the Orange Bowl.

Oklahoma finished with a grade of .9757 out of 1.000 in the BCS standings, which are determined using the USA Today coaches’ poll, the Harris Interactive poll and six computer rankings. Florida was second at .9479.

Texas, the only team to beat Oklahoma this season, finished third in the BCS at .9298, while Alabama dropped to fourth at .8443 after more than a month atop the standings.

USC is fifth after winning the Pac-10 title and is followed by Mountain West Conference champion Utah, Texas Tech (11-1), Big Ten winner Penn State and Western Athletic Conference champion Boise State (12-0). Ohio State (10-2) is the highest two-loss team at No. 10.

Conference Ties

The winners of the six BCS conferences -- the Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Southeastern, ACC and Pac-10 -- are guaranteed a spot in a BCS bowl game.

While Mountain West-champion Utah received one of the four at-large berths, along with Texas, Alabama and Ohio State, undefeated Boise State didn’t get an invitation to one of the BCS bowls. There’s never been more than one non-BCS team in the championship-series bowls in the same season.

Big East champion Cincinnati finished 12th in the BCS standings, while ACC winner Virginia Tech was 19th. ACC teams have lost their past eight BCS bowl appearances.
