Yankees' Joba Chamberlain Arrested on DUI, Speeding Charges

By Mason Levinson

Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain was arrested in Lincoln, Nebraska, early yesterday after allegedly driving under the influence, speeding and having an open container of alcohol in his car.

Chamberlain, a 23-year-old whose hometown is Lincoln, was stopped shortly after 1 a.m. local time and a trooper detected an odor of alcohol, Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins said in a telephone interview. Chamberlain was taken to the Cornhusker Place Detox, an emergency detoxification center in Lincoln, Collins said.

She said she did not know if he was kept overnight and added that most people taken there are released after completing the detoxification process. Collins also didn't know what Chamberlain's blood-alcohol level was or how fast he was driving.

Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo refused to comment on Chamberlain in an e-mail.

The arrest report was filed with the Lancaster County Attorney's Office, which will determine formal charges against Chamberlain tomorrow, Collins said.

Chamberlain was 4-3 with a 2.60 earned run average in 42 appearances for the Yankees this Major League Baseball season, making 12 starts.

Chamberlain started in the bullpen and joined the rotation June 3 before he was put on the disabled list two months later. He returned to the bullpen Sept. 2. Last week, Yankees co- chairman Hank Steinbrenner said he expects Chamberlain to be in the team's starting rotation next season.
