Pettitte Says Clemens Told Him of HGH Use, AP Reports (Update1)

By Erik Matuszewski

Feb. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Andy Pettitte said in an affidavit to Congress that Roger Clemens admitted 10 years ago to using human growth hormone, the Associated Press reported.

Pettitte disclosed the conversation he had with Clemens to the congressional committee holding today's hearing on the use of performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball, the AP said, citing an unidentified person familiar with the affidavit.

New York Yankees pitcher Pettitte also told the committee that Clemens backtracked when they talked about HGH again in 2005, the same year Congress held its first hearing on steroids in baseball, the AP said. Clemens said then that Pettitte misunderstood the earlier conversation and that he actually had been talking about his wife using HGH, the AP reported.

The New York Daily News reported last week that Clemens's wife, Debbie, got an injection of HGH before posing in a bikini for 2003 Sports Illustrated magazine.

Clemens and Pettitte are friends and former teammates on the New York Yankees and Houston Astros.

Pettitte, Chuck Knoblauch and Kirk Radomski won't testify today, House Oversight and Reform Committee chairman Henry Waxman said in a statement. Pettitte yesterday asked the committee to be excused from publicly testifying against Clemens, the New York Times reported.

Former Teammates

Knoblauch is a former New York Yankees teammate of Clemens and Pettitte, and Radomski is a former New York Mets clubhouse worker who pleaded guilty to distributing steroids to baseball players. Pettitte, Knoblauch and Radomski all gave closed-door depositions to the committee ahead of today's hearing on Capitol Hill, as did Clemens and McNamee.

``Mr. Knoblauch and Mr. Pettitte answered all the committee's questions and their testimony at the hearing is not needed,'' Waxman said in the statement yesterday.

Clemens is scheduled to testify along with former trainer Brian McNamee, who said he injected Clemens with steroids and HGH between 1998 and 2001. Clemens has repeatedly denied taking steroids or HGH, while Pettitte said he used HGH five years ago while recovering from an injury.

E-mails sent by Bloomberg News to Clemens's lawyer, Rusty Hardin, and Pettitte's lawyer, Jay Reisinger, seeking comment were not immediately returned.

The AP reported that Hardin said in an e-mail that he didn't know what Pettitte said.
