Tampa Bay Rays Sign Pat Burrell to Add Home-Run Power to Lineup

By Danielle Sessa

Jan. 5 (Bloomberg) -- The Tampa Bay Rays signed Pat Burrell to a two-year contract to add home-run power to their lineup.

Burrell hit 33 home runs for the Philadelphia Phillies last season, while batting .250 with 86 runs batted in. The outfielder spent his entire nine-year career in Philadelphia and will probably be Tampa Bay’s designated hitter.

Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed by the Rays. Fox Sports reported on its Web site that it was worth $16 million.

The Rays lost to the Phillies in the World Series after finishing the 2007 season with the worst record in Major League Baseball. Cliff Floyd and Rocco Baldelli combined for 15 home runs in the designated-hitter spot for Tampa Bay last season.

Burrell, 32, is a career .257 hitter who has hit 20 or more home runs the past eight seasons.

Philadelphia signed free-agent Raul Ibanez to play left field rather than re-sign Burrell.
