Oct. 26 (Bloomberg) -- About 30,000 New England residents have a practical reason to be rooting for the Boston Red Sox in the World Series: free furniture.
Jordan's Furniture, a Taunton, Massachusetts-based chain owned by billionaire Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc., estimates that many customers will receive free sofas, tables or beds if the Red Sox win two more games to claim Major League Baseball's championship. Boston leads the best-of-seven series 2-0 against the Colorado Rockies heading into Game 3 tomorrow in Denver.
``We had some customers spend over $100,000 for a whole house full of furniture to get in on the deal,'' Eliot Tatelman, Jordan's chief executive officer, said in a telephone interview.
The furniture giveaway is part of a ``Monster Deal'' that the company, which is in its first year of a promotional agreement with the team, set up before the start of spring training.
Consumers who bought a dining room table, sofa or bed at Jordan's between March 7 and April 16 will receive a rebate of the purchase price. The company, which has an insurance policy to cover the costs of the promotion, wouldn't disclose the value of the merchandise bought during the five-week period, or details of the insurance policy.
``Where we got the insurance and how it works is totally private,'' Tatelman said. ``The point is: We are insured, so investors don't have anything to worry about, and we all get to root for the Red Sox.''
Tatelman has said the deal is insured for more than $20 million, according to Furniture Today, a weekly industry publication.
July 10 Delivery
To be eligible for the rebate, furniture had to be delivered by baseball's July 10 All-Star Game.
Buffett, who also owns three other furniture chains, bought Jordan's in 2000 soon after meeting Tatelman and his brother, Barry. Jordan's has three stores in Massachusetts and one in New Hampshire.
Buffett was unavailable to comment on the promotion, said Jackie Wilson, a spokeswoman at Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire Hathaway.
The Red Sox, who went 86 years without a World Series title before capturing the 2004 championship, won the American League East title this year, ending a nine-year run by the New York Yankees. Boston, winners of six World Series titles, then defeated the Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland Indians to advance to its 11th World Series.
