CBS’s Barclays Golf Ratings Rise 106% as Woods Finishes Second

Aug. 31 (Bloomberg) -- CBS’s television ratings for the final round of the Barclays golf tournament more than doubled from the previous year, as Tiger Woods came up short in his bid to win the first of four U.S. PGA Tour playoff events.

Woods tied for second place after Heath Slocum sank a 21- foot par putt on the final hole at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey. It was Slocum’s third career victory and Woods’s second consecutive runner-up finish to go with five wins this season.

Slocum’s putt came after Woods, No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking, missed a 7-foot birdie attempt that would have put him atop the leaderboard for the first time and forced a playoff.

With Woods in contention for most of the final round, CBS drew an average 3.7 rating and reached 8 percent of U.S. households watching television yesterday, New York-based CBS Corp. said in a statement, citing Nielsen Media Research data.

That compares with a 1.8 rating and 4 percent share for last year’s final round, in which Vijay Singh defeated Sergio Garcia and Kevin Sutherland in a playoff at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey.

Woods averaged 28.5 putts per round for the tournament to tie for 45th in the field, the worst among the top 15 finishers.

Woods will return this week to play in the Deutsche Bank Championship near Boston, an event that benefits his charitable foundation. The top 70 players in the FedEx Cup points standings will then move on to the BMW Championship in Chicago, with the top 30 advancing to the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta.

The Barclays tournament was the first event at the $250 million private club built by Reebok International Ltd. founder Paul Fireman across the Hudson River from Manhattan.
