Collingwood Lifts England to Win Against South Africa (Update1)

By James Cone

Nov. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Paul Collingwood hit a century as England beat South Africa by seven wickets in the second one-day cricket international at Centurion today.

Collingwood, who earlier took two wickets, finished unbeaten on 105 as England reached its victory target with four overs remaining. The visitors made 252-3 in response to South Africa’s 250-9 in its allotted 50 overs.

England takes a 1-0 lead in the five-match series, with the opener washed out two days ago. It has won the six most recent completed one-day matches between the teams since South Africa recorded its last victory against England in April 2007.

Alviro Petersen top-scored for South Africa today with 64 runs before being bowled by Tim Bresnan, who also dismissed captain Graeme Smith. Hashim Amla, 57 runs, and JP Duminy, 41 runs, had given the home team a platform with a 73-run partnership for the third wicket.

England stuttered to 45-2 in its reply following the early dismissals of Andrew Strauss and Kevin Pietersen. Jonathan Trott and Collingwood then added 162, with Trott making 87 runs. Eoin Morgan smashed 27 not out from 18 balls.

The next match is on Nov. 27 in Cape Town, followed by games in Port Elizabeth and Durban. The teams are also scheduled to play four Test matches.
