Gambling, Henry’s Handball Force FIFA Soccer Officials to Meet
By Chris Elser
Nov. 23 (Bloomberg) -- FIFA officials will hold an emergency meeting Dec. 2 to discuss the Thierry Henry handball that helped put France in the soccer World Cup finals. Gambling and referees’ decisions will also be discussed.
“Due to recent events in the world of football, namely incidents at the play-offs for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, match control (refereeing) and irregularities in the football betting market, the FIFA President has called an extraordinary meeting of the executive committee,” the sport’s executive panel said today in an e-mailed statement.
